PMI, XRF & LIBS Analyzers

Positive Material Identification (PMI) is the analysis of a metallic alloy to establish composition. By examining the qualities of the sample's comprising elements, a precise measurement of the sample's composition can be determined. Typical methods for PMI testing include X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).

X-ray fluorescence (XRF) is the emission of specific x-rays from a material (fluorescence) that has been bombarded with high-energy X-rays or gamma rays. By reading this secondary x-ray spectrum, the inspection technician can determine the elemental and chemical composition of the material being tested. This method is used primarily in the fields of geochemistry, forensic science, and archaeology. Materials tested can be ceramics, glass, metals, or building materials.

Conversely, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) uses a focused high-energy laser pulse to excite the sample. As the laser pulse hits the sample, a very small part of it is atomized. The atomized sample emits a characteristic frequency of light that is analyzed through optical emission spectrometry to determine the constituent elements. Since LIBS can detect any element, when the comprising elements of a sample are already known, this method can be used to monitor for the presence of impurities or the relative abundance of each comprising element. LIBS can, in principle, be used on nearly any material and is limited only by the power of the laser.
