Post-emulsifiable penetrants are classified by how they remove the excess penetrant from a material. Method B describes lipophilic post-emulsifiers where the penetrant is oil soluble and the emulsifier is oil based. The two interact with one another to remove excess penetrant. Method C needs a solvent to remove the penetrant. Method D describes hydrophilic post-emulsifiers where the penetrant is water soluble and removes excess penetrant with a water wash.
The penetrants are then classified by level to determine their strength or the detect ability. The higher the level, the higher the detect ability, starting at level 1/2 and ending at level 4.
