Techna NDT traces its origins to the pioneering work of Boeing engineer Van Phelps in the 1950s and 60s, where he laid the groundwork for eddy current probe technology while researching ultrasound. In 1984, Phelps founded NDT Engineering Corporation, manufacturing one of the first widely available eddy current probes for the airline industry.

Two decades later, in 2004, Techna NDT was established by Phelps's daughter Trish and partners. Trish, a specialist in ultrasonic transducers, became the company's primary expert on UT technology. Techna NDT's core mission was to produce high-quality reference standards, eddy current probes, ultrasonic transducers, and related accessories.
