Ultrasonic testing is an NDT method in which beams of high-frequency sound waves are introduced into materials to determine the internal structure and other unseen characteristics. The most common method of ultrasonic testing, ultrasonic thickness measurement, is used when only one side of a test sample is accessible. Ultrasonic thickness gauges determine the thickness of a sample by measuring the amount of time it takes the sound waves to travel through the material and reflect back to the transducer.
This NDT method is used predominantly in the monitoring of corrosion on the interior of industrial pipework. Ultrasonic thickness gauges are also used in other industries such as aerospace and automotive manufacturing, where unseen internal corrosion and material thickness is a concern. Most of the samples that are tested are made from steel or other iron alloys. However, ultrasonic thickness gauges are also used to measure paint and coating thickness. They can also test glass, plastics, and ceramic composites.
