Bruker G4 ICARUS C HF – Dedicated to Carbon – committed to carburization
|
Code: g4-c hf
|
|

Implementing the latest design of the G4 ICARUS CS HF with all its benefits like a nearly maintenance free operation, the new ICARUS C HF sets a new milestone in price to performance ratio for rapid and precise carbon determination. With a small footprint and its unique 3 year warranty on the HF-generator tube and the NDIR detector, the G4 ICARUS reduces the operational costs and TCO of combustion analysis even further.
For the application of carbon measurement in shim stocks, the G4 ICARUS C HF analyzer is equipped with one selective solid state NDIR detector for CO2. The measuring range is optimized, but not limited to, the carbon concentration range of the base foils (~ 0.1% C) and the charged material after the carburization test (up to about 1.5% C).
The application
A tough core and a hard case are the target properties of components made of case hardened steel. That combination of wear resistance and fatigue strength in the surface and impact strength in the core zone is achieved by carburizing the surface layer of the components.
Case hardening depth of carburized steel is a function of temperature, carburizing time and the available carbon potential at the surface. Therefore not only the composition of the carbon-bearing atmosphere but also its effect on the steel must be controlled very closely. To measure this effect reliably and accurately shim stocks, which are thin very low-carbon annealed steel sheets or gauze, are exposed to the furnace atmosphere. Like the steel work piece they will absorb carbon to an equilibrium level.
G4 ICARUS – Direct determination of the carbon potential
The preferred method to measure the carbon concentration in test foils, to control the carbon potential, is the combustion method in a high-frequency furnace in oxygen with infrared detection of formed CO2. This kind of carbon analysis directly determines the maximum carbon potential of the furnace atmosphere up to the theoretical limit of carbon saturation in austenite.
